When I started my career, I have been attracted by one (of many) question : how accurate is the surface/volume calculations knowing the uncertainties of the points that define these geometrical figures. I really wanted to know in term of standard deviation what would be the "end results".

The solution was to propagate the variances (standard deviation squared) into the functional model (the mathematical formula in short) and to retrieve the results I was looking for.

By taking the formula to deter

SOFTWARE FREE BUBBLE GNSS ROVER RTK

Good news for all of you who are using a GNSS RTK without the fancy tilt meter and IMU onboard !Ā

You can turn your today GNSS receiver to do the "free bubble style" by mixing up 2 technologies that popped up last year.

The first one is about software receiver as we learnt we can feed the digital signal processing part of a GNSS receiver into a smartphone and the second one is that we don't need to take the GNSS survey pole vertical !

My approach of this problem has been developed and tested alread

THE DEAD END OF THE TRAVERSE METHOD

One of the typical survey method for determining station's points and survey details has been the traverse method. There have been considerable discussions on the way to "adjust" angles and distances and lot of rules of thumb while rigorous Least Squares Adjustment softwares are available anywhere.

I would say "too much" talks and controversial exchanges for a method that is simply not appropriated anymore considering modern instruments. Long traverses (geodetic) have been anyway replaced by usin

With Survey Earth in a Day just around the corner again, knowing where your local markers are will come in handy when deciding where to submit a point from. Aside from our growing collection of Survey Marker Photos (photos tagged 'marker' inside the community), occasionally we will share marker photos on our Facebook Page which surveyors around the world respond to with, of course, their own marker photos.Ā  Take a look at this post for example and the comments which followed.

Plotting while measuring saves time and make the drawing accurate with no ambiguities.Ā Creating accurate drawings is painless with a Bluetooth enabled DISTO device. If you paired the Distometer with AutoCAD mobile app, the Plotting can be done simultaneously.

First turn on Bluetooth in both devices and pair them. See the image below.

Here is a typical Surveyor's Report attached to many of the jobs that I do. This particular Land Survey was extremely complex and difficult but I thought you might get a kick out of seeing how this is done. The names and other information have been altered to protect the innocent.

SECTION 179 TAX BENEFIT - Don't Miss Out

ONLY 28 DAYS REMAININGĀ

For those of you who do not know what Section 179 is, let me give you my simple definition:Ā  Section 179 allows companies to deduct full purchase price of qualifying equipment or software that was financed or purchased during the tax year.Ā  What this means in laymanā€™s terms (which is the only way I know how to communicate effectively) is that if you bought, financed, or leased qualifying equipment in 2017, you are able to deduct the full purchase price from your gross inco

Should Surveyors Be Alarmed?

While doing a little research into search trends for Land Surveying and Land Surveyors using Google trends, it is quite interesting to see that overall, searches for land surveyors worldwide have gone down significantly since 2008.Ā  Ā  Would you venture to state your opinion as to why this might be the case?

1198868266?profile=original

Should Land Surveyors as a whole be alarmed by this downward spiral in search?Ā

Ā Do you have any ideas as to how we might inject a better image of surveyors to the world?

Hello everyone,

Be aware that a survey truck and a lot of equipment was recently stolen in Folsom. Here is the message from R.E.Y. Engineering along with photos of the suspect:

"Survey community,Ā

I hope you don't mind I am taking the time to send you this email but I think that it's important to come together in situations like this. Our company was robbed of two laser scanners, four total stations, four R10's, a level and a survey truck. All this totals to about $350,000 of survey equipment. Pl
