Have you heard about Copan? It's fairly new and it's free.It enables you to calculate coordinate geometry, process field surveys, adjust map traverses, perform map checks, calculate areas/perimeters, transform coordinatess, and import/export Ascii files. It's available for Windows, Palm, and Pocket computers, from http://www.underhill.ca/Software/ugl_software.php.I welcome your thoughts.

  • Copan for Windows version 09.06 (released on 2009.06.24) adds these features:
    o Continuous coordinate readout.
    o Instant point-to-point measure.
o More angle and area precision options.
You can download Copan from our home page or from our Box on LSU!
  • Version 08.12 (released on 2008.12.22) of Copan for Windows has improved support for the different bearing (or azimuth) formats used around the world.

It supports quadrant and whole-circle bearings, south-based and north-based circle bearings, and gons (or grads) as well as degrees.
  • Good questions, Darren.

The free version of Copan cannot export to DXF/DWG files. However, a future version of Windows Copan will export directly to DWG files. (Our in-house version has been doing this for years.)

Generally, Copan cannot talk (upload/download) directly to total stations or digital levels; it imports/exports ascii files which you, independently of Copan, copy to/from instruments. However, Copan Mobile (PocketPC/PalmOS versions) can get coordinates directly from a GPS device, if the device's output is in NMEA 0183 format and is via a (virtual/actual) serial port.

Does it export DXF or DWG files?
What can you upload to a survey instrument?
Can you download straight into it, or do you need to use another program to extract survey information?
