Safety is an industry in itself these days, and rightly so, we all want to get home to our families every day. I mean, we work to live right, we don't live to work.
I'd like to know some of the major hazards you have faced in your survey career and what measures you have taken to eliminate risk.
What safety systems does your workplace employ, do you think it adequately covers all the risks of being out in the field?

Thank you much for this information.

Safety in Surveying has been a very good discussion. Safety in Surveying now has a group: Safety in Surveying <please direct any future comments to this discussion there, or in Poisonous Plants & Dangerous Animals if it is about safety around bees, cobras, etc. Real problems - real solutions. That is what Land Surveyors United is all about.
here are a few interesting guides and info related to ways to avoid killer bees
How to Escape from Killer Bees
Killer Bees How to Avoid
Common Questions:
Have you had a problem with Africanized honey bees? Send us your story.
Of course, I'll try that but not to the King Cobras! :)
Arnel, this is not only about first aid. This is about making a cloud of misery and certain death to killer bees. Although it actually is scientifically proven, I recommend trying it first on regular bees, wasps, or other insects. It would be nice if it also works with cobras. Let me know how that turns out:-)
Hi Scott!
Is this scientifically proven? Can you share with me the link?
Of course, what I wish for is prevention from bee attack. It appears to me that your post is more on first aid.
Thank you so much for sharing Scott!
I'll take your suggestion very seriously. I hope I can also share this with my friends in the industry.

Killer Bee Repellent
To create a liquid bee repellent that also kills bees on contact, begin with a cup of hot peppers. Hot peppers contain capsaicin; it is the substance that
makes your tongue burn when you eat them. Cut up the peppers, then
pour 2 pints of boiling water over them. Let the water cool and then
strain it into a spray bottle. Add in a couple teaspoons of liquid
dish soap. The capsaicin burns bees, which repels them. Dish soap
contains compounds called surfactants, which allows the soap to
penetrate a bee's soft body. The combination of capsaicin and soap
kills bees when they are sprayed with the mixture.
Applications
Spray the liquid bee repellent and killer outdoors in areas where you want to deter bees. For an outdoor picnic table, spray the table legs and the ground
around it. If you encounter any bees, you can use the liquid as a bee
killer by dowsing them with it. To avoid irritating your skin with
the capsaicin, wear rubber gloves when using the spray. Capsaicin and
soap can make your eyes burn, so avoid spraying the solution into the
wind or wear protective glasses when using it.
Enjoy it, but do not get it in your eyes :-)

My exposure to European grade safety policy on industrial surveys for a quite number of years totally changed my views and even my lifestyle on the importance of safety. Safety is very important and can never compromise safety. However, there is one danger in work I am exposed to that still I can't effectively address - killer bees. Anybody guys knowledgeable on how to handle killer bees? Thank you.
"Safety in Surveying" sounds like a good title for a group. There are a lot of common sense questions and common sense answers, but there are also regulatory agencies and laws on the topic. In the USA there is OSHA, Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration. What regulatory compliance is there in the rest of the world? I have no Idea. This could be a group that could help save surveyors from being fined for safety violations, or the group could even help save lives. What does everybody think about having this new group called "Safety in Surveying"?
This is a great question, as surveyors across the globe should have different answers depending on where they work and the types of danger they have to contend with from day to day..
