Hey everybody just wanted to introduce myself my name is Steve Davis. I'm very new to surveying. I love every day I come to work I get excited to do new and different types of surveying within the job. Right now I'm just trying to prove myself to our crew chiefs. Sometimes I feel like I'm such a disappointment to all of them and at the end of the day it really takes a tole on me.But I have to keep telling myself these guys have done it for years and I've done it a little over 4 months.

You are welcome! Not all chiefs likes to teach, some you don't want to learn from. One thing you can get from the bad ones is what not to do. When you work for a chief that is always chasing his tail, watch him and take notes on his mistakes. Then, try to and not repeat them. I have learned a lot from both kinds.

      • Steve, don't ever give up ,all party chiefs have different personallys some good some bad find one that likes to teach you ask every dumb guest you can think of,ask if you can look at the job folder in the morning read all and watch how your party proceeds with the task

Hey Steve...Welcome to the wonderful world of surveying. Don't fret, we all started out like this. Not much in life can prepare you for a career in this field. I can remember trying to please my first party chiefs. The best thing I can recommend is to pay attention and take notes on any and everything your chiefs and others show you. Get yourself a field book for this. I still have the one I used when I first started 16 years ago. I still have to reference it from time to time. It contains formulas, sketches, random thoughts, etc.I even have had other surveyors draw in it to explain the information they were trying to teach me. I was once told, "A  surveyor is only as good as his bag of tricks" You will be bombarded with new information! It will be impossible to remember it all. You will have moments of great frustration and moments of total bliss when a new concept clicks or payday whichever comes first!!! Remember smile you are a part of the 2nd oldest profession in history. Learn and enjoy...Good luck!

  • Thanks Charles! I really love this stuff! I just wish u had gotten into this field of work years earlier. One thing I will do that I see alot of my crew chiefs not doing is, be willing to teach and give helpful pointers and not act like someone is after my job. It's a team or in this case a party lol that gets the job done not just one.
