Hi Guys,
I'm having to provide digital building elevations for every site survey carried out. Currently I use my Total Station (Trimble S6) for the field work and process the data in CAD. Elevations tend to take a fair amount of time in the field and then take twice as long processing in the office. The final drawing can look fairly simple and yet it does not equate to the time taken for its production. I carried out my first drone survey yesterday and was amazed at the speed of the data collection and then the fact that the processing software carried out much of the office work. Has anyone much experience with carrying out elevations with a drone and are they able to comment on the accuracy, speed, outlay for software & time taken to learn the software? Any help would be much appreciated.
Kind Regards
Guido

Guido,
In my brief experience, ONLY if you use the correct procedure (which I'm not an expert at) and use plenty of control. Personally, were I you, I'd conduct a side by side comparison of a few jobs and see how the two match. I'd love to hear your results, and the procedures you used for the drone mapping (if they compare favorably.)
I also found a video posted by Vikshut under our Videos page. He has a full course, that you can get for $50 with the Code (I forget what it is, but he gives it in a post.) I'd recommend something like that for you. Others may have some suggestions as to some good training.
I do know that this isn't just a push the button procedure. Aerial Photogrammetry has been around a long time, and there are proven methods and procedures that should be followed to get a precise result.
I hope this helps,
Keith
Many thanks Keith for your reply. We're trying out a few software packages at the moment: "Dronedeploy", "Pix4d" and "Maps made easy". As you say I hope to compare the results which I've undertaken with my trusty total station.
