Please forgive my stupidity. I am studying ancient Chinese agriculture and the turtle is often mentioned. How does the Turtle operate?

    Thank you.

I would love to comment but I'm unsure of the question... turning points or change plates?

The change plate or turtle is the item that is used when you are using the digital invar rods. We use them here in Canada a lot when doing precise leveling. I have read in some survey text books that if you are leveling on solid ground then you not need to use the change plate but at our company the level crew uses the change plates all the time until they reach a monument or the monitoring point they need to level.

Getting back to precise leveling of points in a deformation leveling loop what would be better? Turning on each deformation point or measuring the point and then carry on to the next point and not turn on the point at all?
