Hello everyone,

Be aware that a survey truck and a lot of equipment was recently stolen in Folsom. Here is the message from R.E.Y. Engineering along with photos of the suspect:

"Survey community,

I hope you don't mind I am taking the time to send you this email but I think that it's important to come together in situations like this. Our company was robbed of two laser scanners, four total stations, four R10's, a level and a survey truck. All this totals to about $350,000 of survey equipment. Pl

Land Surveying Related Patents

Searching google patents for "land surveying" can be an interesting adventure.  You'll find that there have been so many great ideas over the years by land surveyors hoping to change the way they work, get better results or just invent something the world has never seen before.  Below are a few of the more interesting land surveying related patents that I found.

When I started my career, I have been attracted by one (of many) question : how accurate is the surface/volume calculations knowing the uncertainties of the points that define these geometrical figures. I really wanted to know in term of standard deviation what would be the "end results".

The solution was to propagate the variances (standard deviation squared) into the functional model (the mathematical formula in short) and to retrieve the results I was looking for.

By taking the formula to deter

Surveying Jobs CAN Be Found! Here Is The Proof!

Proof the you CAN find a Job in Land Surveying

Today I am going to prove to you that it is possible to find a land surveying job. I have heard too many out-of-work surveyors say that they cannot find employment in their state, despite the fact that they have years of experience, a license and have searched "everywhere."

Today I will show you something that I made to prove this very statement wrong. Hopefully, there will be many out of work land surveyors out there who will use this resource and

Introducing America's Building Records

There is a box or drawer full of old plats, blueprints and survey drawings that are collecting dust somewhere at your surveying company.  Why not scan them into a file archive and monetize them?  Imagine being able to sell access to those old surveys, retain the rights and permissions and make money twice with them.  This is exactly what America's Building Records is providing the construction industry- the ability to do just that.  Land Surveyors United recently partnered with ABR and would lik

I recently was making a new friend on Land Surveyors United and he sent me an email with a quick note implying that the economy wasn’t too good where he worked and jokingly made reference to going “mining” if things don’t pick up. What caught my attention is when he mentioned that 2 months ago he was “flat out” and now has very little work. This didn’t surprise me and I now know, from experience, that this is just the beginning for him, and things may get worse.

If you look at the timeline listed

The Future is Bright for Land Surveyors

Survey Earth in a Day 5Land Surveyors Have a Bright Future

This is something that I keep telling myself.  This is what my Dad (Skip Farrow) used to say whenever we hit a milestone with this community- and over the years, we hit a lot.  I've been putting off writing this post for almost a year.  It has simply been too difficult to write since my dad passed away last June.  Nevertheless, this is hopefully going to be a happy post in celebration of the life of a man who loved surveying, enjoyed helping surveyors accompli

Analyse Traverse example

Why is "traverse 3" a good solution and "traverse 1" not? What is the difference in accuracy and  reliability?

Following examples are calculated with BestNetwork.

Traverse is a method to establish control networks. Traverse networks involve placing survey stations along a line and then using the previously surveyed points with known coordinates as a base for observing the next point.

If you care to start chatting with other surveyors about other surveying related stuff, check out this new chat room i created over here at Lingr. The idea here is simple: Surveyors are a tight net group, but usually when they are in the woods or in the bar. I would like to see the same type of friendships built online. Check it out. It takes 2 minutes to create your profile and you can find other surveyors instantly. Lets grow this membership!

It seems reasonable to think that removing the huge pecan tree east of the ProFlex500 base station antenna would influence the OPUS results.  But my first OPUS report following removal of the tree was included in the current average NAD83(2011) position.  This remains a work in progress.  Over time there will be more OPUS sessions.  Each time I will decide whether to include it in the average or begin again.

The OPUS reports, raw data files, and more photos are available on my projects ftp site.

The Origins of "Bluetooth"

Modern day land surveyors are no strangers to devices which feature "bluetooth" capabilities and functions. In fact, there is a strong chance that you are either holding a bluetooth enabled device or sitting quite close to one. Nevertheless, most of us probably have no earthly idea where the odd word came from.  So, for my first post on this wonderful network, I'm going to tell you.

Bluetooth
