We have heard many arguments from critics over the last few years berating professional land surveyors for not holding existing fences, improvements, or other evidence of possession on the ground as the boundary lines of real property. At the same time, other critics have called for holding, as the boundary corner, iron rods, pipes or other objects merely because they exist and were found somewhere near the alleged corner. They say that the mere existence of this evidence of possession, e

A client who was a custom home builder ordered a Standard Survey (survey without the benefit of a title policy) on a parcel composed of a fractional lot in a recorded subdivision created in the 30s. This particular client had ordered some small subdivisions in the past but they were redeveloping this existing fractional lot and building an expensive custom home on it. Many of the parcels within this particular subdivision were bei
Searching google patents for "land surveying" can be an interesting adventure. ย You'll find that there have been so many great ideas over the years by land surveyors hoping to change the way they work, get better results or just invent something the world has never seen before. ย Below are a few of the more interesting land surveying related patents that I found.

Staying On Top!
An extremely exciting announcement goes out today about the new way that activity and discussions on Land Surveyors United works.ย When on the main page of the network, you will now see something somewhat similar to a feature we had in the past (which i had hacked to run inside the network for years hoping to encourage Ning to integrate) but today it works quite differently.ย When you update your status from this box, you will instantly see your status posted in real time witho
Interesting article about GPS stations - CORS.
Even underground nuclear tests leave their mark on the part of the upper atmosphereย known as the ionosphere, the researchers discovered, when they examined GPS data recorded the same day as a North Korean nuclear test in 2009. Within minutes on that day, GPS stations in nearby countries registered a change in ionospheric electron density, as a bubble of disturbed particles spread out from the test site and across the planet.

Had an interview last week with DEI in Phoenix.ย It was a goodย meeting, one of the best I've had since 2008.ย However, its still another case of being too expensive - they can't afford much in benefits, no healthcare coverage, and cannot guarantee 40 hrs/wk.ย Since I have a regular steady job (which I cannot stand), its a huge risk to go back into surveying to support my family.
I'm growing weary of the wait for the recovery to happen in Arizona.

Last, it is difficult, if not impossible to write about abstract plants and abstracting of land titles, and at the same time ignore title insurance; particularly for a man whose background and experience has been primarily in that field. Besides, a grave injustice would be done many readers if I failed to comment on the anomalous position which the abstracter and the owner of the abstract plan and business find themselves today.

Since about 1908, the abstract business has been engaged in a vigo

A woman called me one morning asking for a Standard Land Survey on her property in my town. She and her husband lived out of state and had purchased the lot in question at a tax auction some four years earlier. They had purchased the land speculating that they could sell it sometime in the future at a profit. They had viewed the land prior to their purchase and she told me that they were under the impression that there was a small old house on it. They assumed the l
Today, LSU Justin added something to the network (down in the Surveyor Apps bar on site) which may seriously change the game a little bit. ย It is a Virtual Surveyors Conference/ Chat Room that can be used anytime for discussing anything you like with your friends and associates here on Land Surveyors United.
ย
How Does the Surveyors Conference Chat Room Work?
Basically, the more connections (friend/associates) you have on Land Surveyors United, the more people you will have available to chat wit

When you click that you are given the option to embed a video from any video service on the
Proof the you CAN find a Job in Land Surveying
Today I am going to prove to you that it is possible to find a land surveying job. I have heard too many out-of-work surveyors say that they cannot find employment in their state, despite the fact that they have years of experience, a license and have searched "everywhere."
Today I will show you something that I made to prove this very statement wrong. Hopefully, there will be many out of work land surveyors out there who will use this resource and

Today I'm going to take a ย short break on the Happy Birthday LSU posts and explain something that has been on my mind for over a year now. ย Namely, the ways that QR codes and bar code scanning may change the way surveyors do business in the near future.
