  • I have heard a few good things about this program as well since my original post. http://www.rockware.com/product/featuresLobby.php?id=205&catego.... I will be honest in saying my only experience is only in what I have read so far. Quicksurf is a program that is apparently fairly common in the Mining industry where everything is about surfaces. Unlike some of the other programs mentioned like Teramodel, Carlson or Civil 3D, the main focus of this program is surfaces and contours. So I would have to get you to ask the question, What is it I am trying to do? Is your focus an overall surveying/engineering program, or do you just need to make some contour maps?
  • There are many programs out there that do a great job analyzing the data and generating accurate contours. Breaklines and flat areas are always the true test of how well the software performs. Terramodel handles surfaces well and is one you hear little about any more, but I always felt it was made for surfacing. It has been a long time since I have done contours in any of the ARC (ESRI) products but they seemed to handle large amounts of data well and would probably be my first choice if I were looking to generate contours for say a county flood plain map or something. It really handles the data well. I think Carlson Survey does a nice job on contours and is easy to use. Land Desktop is defunct so it does not matter how well it does or does not do contours, but Civil 3D does about the same job as Land Desktop did as far as quality of the contours. You really have dozens of options out there. On my website I am sure I have the steps for doing them in Carlson Survey. For any of the others there are lots of great resources on the web depending on which program you decide to go with. If you want to discuss this further I would be happy to offer advice, opinion, suggestions, and answers if you want to email me. Good luck and happy contouring!
