Hi Gregory, There is very few surveyors to day that know how all of this works and even fewer who have actually done a compass survey . I was on a retracement team for township and sections.were we tried our best to follow everything we could ,not just the calls but everything described the the old Gov't notes was taken in consideration, even the geography and topography .This also included all magnetic bearings with declination and without, all the variations, secular, daily, annual and irregular that was recorded with local attractions taken in.We had Isogonic chart for then and time of the new survey. We also did solar and Polaris observations. There is more to compass township and section survey than just breaking out the old transit that has a compass .We even had a transit with a solar attachment with us..You would be
surprise on how accurate these surveys were, and there batteries never died.

Hi Billy,
thanks for the info. I guess I'm the right track, I just want repeatability. I don't have built-in compass on my transit. my setup is sort of odd. I taped my compass onto the scope. I have had some luck with this method. any suggestions on that tip?
Gregory Hi , what are you surveying for? I am puzzle on what you are doing with a compass. Is this for timber or something like that. What kind of transit do you have. this is not a circular compass, is it the tube type.
