I see alot of trimble 5800 base and rovers on ebay. cheap. are these still useful? i am a cash guy and of course can't afford to pay 30k for rtk.
i use Microsurvey field genius which has gps on it along with the total station software.
any comments? i know these have got to be 15 years old.

You can get an GNSS with glonass R*-2 and a TSC2 collector for cheap...
the gps units work well may need some updates but the collectors often times have burn't out back light or bad internal batteries.
You can get static observations without a collector using trimble DL from the android play store and an older trimble receiver...it works awesome.
depending on where you live you can also set up a virtual survey reference system for about $800.
