Anyone still using a Topcon APL-1a and knows anyone who still works on these old units?
Ronel,
The only way you can get training for instrument repair will be through the manufacturers. The only way to get training through the manufacturers is to (1) become a dealer, (2) work for a dealer. Even then you'd probably start by repairing one brand like Topcon or Trimble or Leica and then having to learn the others on your own or having to work for another dealer of another brand later down the road.
There are very few, I'm talking 10-15 technicians in the county that can work on (and by work I mean major repairs, not just calibrations) several different brands.
In addition to training you will have to purchase the tooling. Tooling can be anywhere from 5K to 25K per brand model. So, every time Topcon or Trimble or Sokkia, etc come out with a new model you will have to go to more training and buy more tooling. However, if you are looking to just get into calibrations and minor repairs you could save a lot of money and time as you can find some of that information online, from other technicians or sometimes even in user manuals.
If North Carolina is not out of the question for you let me know, we can talk about it.
