I am looking for a methodology on how to effectively determine a total station's standard deviations. I need those specific values for my Least Squares analysis. Relying on values supplied by the manufacturers is unfortunately too generic according to Leica itself. This means that in order to get the real standard deviations for a particular instrument, you need to do it yourself. Any idea? Thank you.

Are you referring to the standard deviation of the instrument after calibrating your instrument? Does your county or state have a calibration range where you can calibrate your instrument. From there you will then be able to obtain the true correction and the standard deviation of your instrument.

interesting conversation i ran across here: http://forum.derletztekick.com/index.php?mode=thread&id=956

  • HMMMM! Good question. I know a little about some of the items in the menu of a Topcon instument when I have one in front of me but I've never seen anything relating to standard deviation. I'm no help but if you find out I'd kinda like to know.
  • Arnel,

if i understand the question correctly, you are wanting to compute the standard deviation of your angles and or distances collected from your total station to input into your least squares?

    is this correct?

here is some info i found where it is being done with a total station

    • Thank you for this link. This will help. Can I download the document?
  • how about using the standard deviation on your calculator, input your set of angles and or distances and hit solve
