I am supposedly posting this discussion in Leica and Microsurvey Groups but I guess this is applicable to all brands. My experience is that my data collector does not support spooling technique. Taking Leica into consideration and Fieldgenius 2010, spooling is not supported. Taking measurements via the data collector provides ease of work in some aspect but also provides annoying delays in measuring succession of points of same class such as ground. It would be much better in taking shots of same class by not taking your head off the telescope in each shot and let the system handles the data logging through spooling. That's the essence of specifying RS232 as the target data storage in Leica TPS but it strangely does not support spooling technique. Any similar experiences? Is there any data collection system out there that supports spooling technique? Thank you.

  • I just hold my TDS recon in one hand and point the gun with the other, when satisfied, I press the "shoot" button and the recon "clicks" I know it has the shot, press the "shoot" button again and it records, the reason for the second press is to allow to change description or HR, so basically point then shoot, shoot, point, shoot, shoot, point, shoot, change description and or HR, shoot, point, shoot, shoot,

    In this case - reflectorless
    • Hi Michael!

Is that shoot button you are referring to a total station or data collector resident? The trigger button I am referring to is a button on my total station. So when I take measurements, I don't need to take off my eyes from the telescope and go on to the next succeeding shots without bothering to take a look at my data collector. That is the spooling technique I am referring to. I hope this is also what you are trying to say. If it is, I'll consider your data collection system. Thank you.

It sounds like your asking which software allows you to take a ground shot, and it gives the next number for the point. Then without doing anything except moving the scope to the next shot, which is the same ground shot and would give it the next number, and repeated for a series of these shots. Sort of like shooting fence post, or power poles, where you will shoot 10 of the same just spools to the next number? Is this correct? If so it would be software instead of hardware.

    • Technically yes. According to Microsurvey regarding Fieldgenius failure to support spooling technique, the communication language/protocol between Leica TPS and data collector hardware is too restrictive. Due to this I am not really sure if the issue in on hardware construction or software design.
Yes, you're right on automatic number increment generation but in addition to that and together with point description, all point information is automatically dumped into the data collection system automatically through spooling without bothering to look at your data collector after each shot. Thank you.

I believe the Allegro CX is supplied with spooling feature...ill look into it..
    • If indeed Allegro supports spooling technique then surely my next handheld PC is an Allegro.
