I've been doing a lot of research(as in hours expended) on this, but have a long way to go. It's been a lean 3 years, but my new partner is a well connected construction surveyor, ex- regional supervisor for a now defunct firm. We are picking up some of the pieces and one of the things I am interested in is expanding our services in BIMs for grading and possibly other contractors.

We have Civl 3-d acad vs 2009, but it's absolutely new to me. So far, I really like what I see. My problem is that when researching this, all I can find is info on Engineering and Architectural BIM's and it is amazing what they are doing now.......daily 3-d photo as-builts with ground lidar etc etc

Anyway....I've read that the Civil 3-d has the capability. I even have the 863 page book that takes you thru the whole software package...everything...but it still doesn't mention a BIM anywhere. Because I can't really find what I am looking in the acad research I've found, I'm gonna sign up for a 6 month trial of topcon sitemaster? or some such program which supposedly does them. Maybe at least that will have instructions specifically on grading BIMs since it is a grading program.......and it is only like $2500 "on sale" like everything right now.....thats still less than upgrading 3 machines to acad 2011...........and I could have a "second opinion" on volumetric and other calculations..........

Can anyone in here throw me a bone as to what information...I mean what DOES the grading BIM consist of? What kind of report or presentation and with what info in it? I am probably severely overthinking it, but I just need to see one. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.
