Carlson Explorer Tips

If you use Carlson Explorer for data collection, you already know how much functionality that it packs. But we all know how qwirky data collectors can be,so how can we save time in the field?  Here are a few time saving tips that you may find useful from the Carlson website:

Transfer Data from collector to your cellphone using Bluetooth

In order to transfer files from your data collector to your cellphone for the purposes of e-mailing files back to your office,, you must make your data collector "discoverable" by other Bluetooth devices. This can be accomplished by the following instructions: 1) Go to your Windows Desktop of your mobile device. 2) Tap the Bluetooth icon on the task bar of your Windows desktop. If your task bar is not visable, press the blue "2ND" key followed by the "W" key on your keypad. (Blue Key followed by "Start" key on the allegro) 3) After the Bluetooth options window opens, select ADVANCED FEATURES/MY BLUETOOTH DEVICE. 4) In the Bluetooth Device Manager, make sure that both DISCOVERABLE and CONNECTABLE are checked ON. 5) Now, use your cellphone's bluetooth capabilities to "search" for other bluetooth devices. 6) Once you have found your data collector, use the option of "browsing" the other bluetooth device to select the files that you wish to e-mail.

Calibrate the Touch screen using the keyboard

To begin the Calibration of the Touchscreen of the Explorer I & II using the Keyboard: 1) tap the Blue 2nd Function Key then tap the ā€œWā€ to open the Start Menu 2) tap the ā€œSā€ key on the keyboard 3) tap the ā€œCā€ key on the keyboard 4) tap the ā€œSā€ key / tap the ā€œSā€ key again to highlight the ā€œStylusā€ icon 5) tap the ā€œEnterā€ key 6) tap the Yellow ā€œ1stā€ key then tap the ā€œBā€ key 7) tap the Yellow ā€œ1stā€ key then tap the ā€œDā€ key 8) tap the ā€œAltā€ key then tap the ā€œRā€ 9) Follow the on-screen prompts to Calibrate the touchscreen 10) When the little crosshair disappears tap the ā€œEnterā€ key on the keyboard to save your Calibration settings

Search for Files on your Carlson Data Collector (How to)

1) Open up the Start Menu On a Carlson Explorer ā€“ tap the Blue 2nd Function key in the upper Left of the Keyboard & then tap ā€œWā€ on the Keyboard On an Allegro - hold the CTRL key and tap the ESC key 2) Tap Start / Programs / Tools / Command Prompt 3) Type in: dir *.crd /s /p Type it with the spaces and everything {i.e. ā€“ dir space *.crd space /s space /p} This procedure can be used to search for all file types. (.rw5, .txt, .crd, etc.) If you happen to know the file name that can also help: JONES.crd, instead of *.crd. The * acts as a wildcard. Hit Enter! This will show you all the CRD files that are in the Data Collector, no matter what Directory they are stored in. IF they havenā€™t been Erased from being stored outside of the SystemCF directory on an Explorer or outside of the C_Drive directory on an Allegro. ---> Or if you would like you can simply download the attached file {Search.bat} below and copy it to the SystemCF folder of an Explorer or the C_Drive folder of an Allegro. Then exit SurvCE / double-tap My Computer / open the folder you saved "Search.bat" into / tap twice on "Search.bat" It will run this search command automatically so you don't have to type it in. Just hit enter to view each screen one-by-one, when the command finishes you can hit enter twice to exit out.

Map the Explorer Keyboard (How to)
In the event that your Carlson Explorer keyboard is not mapped correctly (you press a key expecting one character and instead see a different character printed) I) Here is a quick procedure to fix this in the field: ----------------------------------------------------- 1) Exit SurvCE / open My Computer / double-tap SystemCF 2) Tap once on the file "CarlsonExp..." {-or- "aCarlson6..."} / Tap Edit / tap Copy 3) Tap X on the upper Right / Open My Computer / Double-tap Windows / tap Edit / tap Paste 4) Tap at the bottom edge of your screen / tap Start / Programs / Tools / SaveReg / tap OK 5) Start / Programs / Tools / Warm Boot / YES = this will fix the Keyboard
