I use a few "GIS-like" tools to keep track of what I have done and where.  This is low-tech stuff, but I thought it would be worth mentioning.  For every new project, I get my directions to the site by adding a placemark at the site and naming it with the Client's name and project number.  I have my office placemarked as well, so as soon as i create a placemark for the new survey, I right-click on it and select "directions to here" then I go to my office placemark and select "directions from here".  The beautiful thing about this is that all of these placemarks get accumulated in my places and show upon the "earth" as well.  Before send a proposal for a project I need to know how much travel time there will be.  I also like to see which projects that have already been done are nearby for reference and saved time in research.

I have an AutoCad drawing of the entire county that I do most of my work in. It has the county coordinates on every section corner that the company has ever shot and those that are published values. Each point contains in it's description its source and date. 20 years of work has provided me with almost every section corner, ¼ corner, and many old stone monuments at “forty corners”. This also helps me to estimate costs.
