Clearly, the economy has impacted Land Surveying everywhere. The 10% unemployment threshold was passed in our industry a while ago. Our rollercoaster can be worse than in some
other fields.

When times are good, the Land Surveying Business can be profitable. Others bring us work. Developers,
contractors, architects, engineers, and lawyers may all require or recommend
Land Surveying Services for their Clients.
Frequently, business gets to us because another authority mandates a

Big mistake rookie!

In our line of work we seen people come and go like seasons in a year. As I-man at the time during the Barnett shale in Dallas Fort Worth area,we had a wave of temps come through our company. I love to help the up and coming. But the kid they put on our crew was cocky arrogant and wreck less. Within the third day he was confident, I asked him to start the job on the dc and he lipped, you do it man I already know this pipeline stuff it's easy, you'll be on my crew one day. My PC looked at me and

Coordinate Transformation SMI CVC Version 7

Hello,

I do not understand how to use my SMI software to transform coordinates. I have created a fictional job to illustrate my predicament. I have created points in my SMI card for two centerline PCPs, and four property corners. These are calculated points based on a plat. When I arrive at the job I set a nail across the street from the property, and occupy it.

Calculated Points:

Point   Northing        Easting         Description

100     5000.0000    5000.0000   PCP

101     5000.0000    4400.0

The data were used for this comparison were taken from the measurement lines of the project. Comparison was made for an even and uneven terrain, as the results would be as objective as possible.

Comparison heights for even terrain

Comparison heights for even terrain was based on a sample of 145 points.  For each point were measured by X, Y and Z coordinates with GPS. After that,  X and Y coordinates are transformed from the coordinate system of the state to the

The thought of writing a book never entered my mind until this story came to me in a dream one night. I also wanted to show a little love for my friends and family through the characters in the book. Unfortunately, there aren't many books with a Land Surveyor as the protaganist. This was an opportunity to expose the public to our passion.

Although I've written thousands of land descriptions, it didn't make me a writer. I don't even read books! I am a vivid daydreamer which makes reading difficult

Well, Jaime, Susan & I made it back to the warmth and safety of our Corpus Christi digs on October 3rd.This years Alaska adventure was like none other. I've lived and worked in the "Last Frontier" for almost twenty years now and this season we got to go to places I've never even heard of much less seen.We arrived at our base camp in Nome the last week of May. We could have postponed that a few weeks as there was still 3 to 4 feet of snow still standing on the ground on arrival. Norton Sound was

6 weeks in the swamp ...

We've finally finished 6 weeks of cutting line in the central Florida swamps for a 100+ acre tract that had almost no open areas. I've been unemployed for 6 months when an old employer called me up and offered me a field position again ... I've been getting soft in the office as a manager for about 5-6 years and he wanted me to head a crew up and go line-cutting. I needed the money badly and jumped on the chance to get back out into the field with gusto. Man how 5 years of sitting on your butt c

Inspiring Quotation for Surveyors

"The problems of boundary lie at the foundation of all surveying, for one must know where a line is before he can measure it, and the solution of these problems calls for the same powers of accurate observation and of consecutive and logical thought that are demanded for successful work in any branch of modern science. It is needless to say that the successful surveyor must be accurate in his instrument work and in his computation; yet, if he would really succeed, he must go beyond this. He must

How Good Was He!

Abstract
WCB Wilson was one of Queensland’s early pioneering surveyors. While we have heard of Dixon, Staplyton and Warner, few of us know the exploits of Wilson. In this sesquicentenary of Queensland as a state, I thought it appropriate to add some character to a name that we may only see on a plan. I also explore the accuracy of one of his surveys in terms of ‘following in his footsteps’ when reinstating boundaries created by Wilson almost 150 years ago.
