Land Surveyor named Indiana Jones

The following story is fictional and any resemblance to actual events is purely coincidental.

Land Surveyor named Indiana Jones

One day I was sitting in my office in Downtown Houston around 5:00 pm in the afternoon in 2001 when the phone rang.  My secretary had already left and I was not anxious to answer it.  I had a…

CHAIN! The weakest link (in the chain)

by: Deward “Karl” Bowles,

Texas RPLS no. 4966

Certain magazines (trade magazines) have purported to represent the current interests of our profession by exposing Land Surveyors to new technologies and philosophies regarding our industry.  These magazines have been around for decades in many cases.

Truth, Justice and the American way

Unable to find a satisfactory job and stuck in a job I hated I finally opened up my own Land Surveying Firm in mid 1992. I was 32 at the time and thought that I knew everything about Land Surveying because of my previous experiences. It goes to show you that ignorance is most often a result of arrogance.

As I look back now I realize that I had no idea at that time what I was doing and I am really uncertain at this point how I managed to…

Typical Surveyor's Report

Something Typical In Surveyor Reporting

I thought that some of you might gain some insight by examining a typical Surveyor's Report generated for a project I am working on.

I have altered the particulars so as to protect the innocent. This is a draft…

It is human nature to choose a course and then stick with it. Tenacity and staunch conviction are qualities we all admire and traditionally seek in those who are leaders in our society. However, professional land surveying is as much of a science as it is an art. Evaluating evidence and forming opinions are vital aspects in executing a proper survey.

Forming an opinion before the facts are known is the definition of a biased opinion and is the death knell for a…

The sickness that has been allowed to pervade even the Land Surveying profession

A Problem in the Land Surveying Profession

Land Surveyors United copycats

As a Land Surveyor I have spent much time contemplating my profession. I have sought to engage Land Surveyors across the world in order to deepen my understanding of what constitutes good practice and good principle. The theory behind Land Surveying always was my focus.

I joined and posted to websites that I thought were dedicated to the purposes I mentioned above. I was very active…

Certificate of Merit in Texas: Joseph G. Gartrell, Jr, v. Ernest Joseph Wren

This is a continuation of an earlier article that I wrote on the subject of Certificates of Merit. I am not surprised that this issue continues to arise.

We continue to see tests of the Texas Civil Practices and Remedies Code due to changes that were a result of the recent tort reform. Case law in the…

Excerpts from W.E. Baxter diary (born March 20, 1875)

Below are excerpts from a diary my great grandfather kept between 1897 to 1956. He was born March 20, 1875 and started keeping a diary a few months before he turned 22. He lived in East Texas during the time and he worked on survey crews and did a lot of surveying as a young man. His first entries in his diary in January of 1897 are crude chaining notes.…

The Land Surveyor and Adverse Possession in Texas

Land Survey Quote of the day

"

Last, it is difficult, if not impossible to write about abstract plants and abstracting of land titles, and at the same time ignore title insurance; particularly for a man whose background and experience has been primarily in that field. Besides, a grave injustice would be done many readers if I failed to…
