Our process for gathering the data from thousands of points around the earth in a single day has changed a bit over the years. This year we are going to try something different. Instead of waiting until Survey Earth in a Day to release the magic button/form for data submission, this year we are going to roll it out early and allow you to test the system and become familiar with the form so that there are no surprises on June 21st at Noon. We want to make this as quick and simple as possible.

1 Surveyors' s How do you know?
1 Surveyors |
Aloha gang,
I will give you a quick introduction:
My name is Tom Pattison. I am a licensed surveyor in 5 states. I have almost 20 years of experience in the field of surveying. With over 12,000 jobs completed and experience from Topography Surveys, Construction surveys, Alta surveys, Residential surveys... all the way to Flood and Shoreline Certificates performed on the Hawaiian Islands. I have conquered just about everything in my professional surveying career. I have traveled from Canada all the

Calculate new coordinates for a boundary in a forest. It is not possible to use GNSS. The approach is to traverse with a total station. The yellow points are unknown. For these points new coordinates have to be calculated.
I have the choice of using old measurements or measure a new traverse. What is the difference in accuracy. What do I gain with new measurement? Here the picture of the two equipments. For both choice I set an accuracy o
Land Surveyors Have a Bright Future
This is something that I keep telling myself. This is what my Dad (Skip Farrow) used to say whenever we hit a milestone with this community- and over the years, we hit a lot. I've been putting off writing this post for almost a year. It has simply been too difficult to write since my dad passed away last June. Nevertheless, this is hopefully going to be a happy post in celebration of the life of a man who loved surveying, enjoyed helping surveyors accompli
In any industry, you have to know your position on the market. Your position on the market means that by compared with your competitors, what are the different values you bring to customers and how to embody your values in the meantime. In the industry where you’re in, what you need to do is to set up and maintain the relationships with your customers.
Is there any way to gather what your customers think?
How do you judge the market ? By your experience or data analysis? But no matter how, you n
Management of road networks and its associated assets is a huge task for all transportation agencies around the world. The traditional ways of collection of data was time consuming and the productivity of the staff was at the best average. With the advent of new technologies like Mobile LiDAR Mapping, the collection, assimilation, analysis, design, construct, maintain and storage of data has become very fast, accurate and cost sensitive This dynamic system of mensuration can be used to acquire h
Getting to the Top of Google:
Have you ever wondered how to get to the Top of the Google Search Results for land surveying? Well here's a sure fire way to do it. AND, it's free. All it takes is a little time and a little reading.
I know you've all seen a Google Results page for a search. But, let me explain the 3 major parts to that page:
1. PPC Ads - where you spend money to get top placement. You pay for each click.
2. Google "My Business" - You can create/manage a FREE page for your local b

This was originally a paper I wrote for my Systems Thinking in Sustainability class which i believe converted nicely into a post. It discusses the role of the land surveyor and the sustainability expert to society. The general lack of public awareness about these important roles and how they are similar. I value your feedback.

It seems nobody wants to start a new project until they have a plan for the future. With the election process up in the air it is hard for most people to predict the future of our national government.
When it was up to me to be sure the company survived our decision was to hunker down and survive the year by chasing projects outside the normal flow of work. I remember helping to test some ro
Remote sensing is a vital system to acquire information of earth resources and environment. Remotely sensed images comprise of spectral, spatial and temporal resolution. The introduction of High-resolution satellite imagery is projected to reduce cost for medium and small scale topographic mapping. Since high-resolution satellite imagery has a much close-fitting field angle, the projection of images is nearly calculated by parallel rather than central systems. Using high resolution we can extrac
Happy Birthday Land Surveyors United
9 Years ago today, during the absolute worst of times, my dad and I started Land Surveyors United in order to change the ways that land surveyors communicated, how they found support and the public perception of what a land surveyor does. With just 5 members and a hard drive full of knowledge base documents, we began doing what we believed to be impossible- creating a social support network for professionals who spend 90% of their time outdoors. Today, we ha

Just a quick note to let you all know that as we start to say goodbye to this old platform, I have added one last awesome feature to the network, which you can find on the home page. This should make it much simpler to post your burning questions, introductions and stories... Enjoy!
If you ever thought experience doesn't pay (and why would you?) you'd be wrong. Take a look at this graph. Entry-level workers have 0-2 years of work experience and require on-the-job supervision, while Fully Competent workers have many years of experience and require no supervision. You can learn a lot right here.
Sharing your experiences in surveying with the community ensures the steady salary climb.
