Hey guys and gals. I was thinking about the set of familiar codes used in the field here in the USA to notate features on a jobsite while surveying. I was wondering if the same codes are used around the world or if there are variations of these codes that you might like to share with us. In fact your comments could be very helpful in the future for student surveyors when learning to identify coding of historical surveys.

Commonly but not exclusively, in Australia, we use numeric coding. The first three digits for the feature and two more digits for the string number. Similar features such as a side entry pit (308), grated pit (309) junction pit (310) all come together is a list making it easy to at least start your search for the code you're after. In an alphabetical list these would be all over the place. BTW, I spent a minute looking for pits in the list above but gave up!!
Cheers
Doug
Sokkia's first data collectors use numbers i still have a list somewhere. The thing is to keep them small as you can. I guess it's what works for you.

It's been along time since i heard CPS .lol
