GPS Systems

I'm looking at getting a GPS system for my survey businessI wanted to get an idea on what everyone thinks is the best system for RTK surveys in terms of accuracy and functionality. Personally I like Trimble gear but I wanted to get an idea of what else is out therethanksDarrenNoble Consulting SurveyorsSurveying WA and the Southwest

  • I'm currently using a Trimble RTK R6 with a TCS2 controller, and to be honest its the best thing since sliced bread (personal Opion), although its not top of the range, when you have good sat coverage you can get sub cm accuracy, due to the rtk connection, the equipment has the feel that its built to last and take the knocks that surveying in the field can throw at it. Plus one of the major points over the leica equipment is the fact that the controller can connect to older leica edms and be used as a data logger, where as the leica gps seems to only be able to interface with the 1200 range, currently i run two leica edms 1105R and a 307, when i ask the leica rep if i'ed be able to interface the gps and the edms he said no, and said i would have to upgraded the edm's, where as the trimble rep just connected the TCS2 via the trimble lead and the system worked.

once a lieca person through and through, now converted to trimble :-)
  • Darren,

I’ve used Trimble (4800) for around 10 years± and have never been disappointed in the equipment or data collector/survey controller. The office software wasn’t too bad either, though you really need to be careful with it. Clearly it wasn’t written by surveyors. I’m sure the office software has been improved greatly in all of the ensuing years.

You might want to look into the Leica GPS systems out there. I purchased a Leica Robotic Total Station last year and I’m very happy with the equipment- everything, like with Trimble, is top-notch.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.
