  Yes airport scanners don't detect it as a treat

  I took a crew to USVI from Baltimore with a full complement of equipment that included GPS. They opened our cases (our gun and gps were carry on) and asked questions. After a brief explanation we went right through. We used a golf luggage bag to house our poles and tripods and bi pods. We also had a large box shipped down there with radios, batteries, chargers and extra equipment we would need. If i were you i would take a copy of the contract and be ready to explain a process they wont understand.

  TSA has a facebook account that you can sen them a picture of what ever item you are questioning and they will let you know if you can carry it on or not.

  GNSS suitcase is no problem. Rods, points, plumb bobs - probably.

  I would assume it would depend solely on the TSA screener/supervisor. 

  I know I had to check all tools when I was doing field service.  Basically if they don't know what it is, you're going to have to check it.
