Anyone have opinions on these 2 near-the-bottom-of-the-line total stations?

Good question Andy,
At first, You can get Nikon's DTM with a quicker accuracy for almost the same price as the Topcon.
Nikon pitches them with the 'fast' pitch, while Topcon sells the quality of it's rugged GTS, Both are very popular from what i can see and are valuable guns, but being that i've not used them a long time, i'd recommend you to read the brochures:
