I myself have taken different job just to get by. I started working as a driller's asst in East New Orleans on the new leeve jobs. I have had snakes crawl across my boots, waited for alligators to move out of the way and of course the heat. But you cant stop this bulldog!
  • Here in my neighborhood ,NE Illinois, real estate, new construction and development are all but at a stand still. Used to be meat and potatoes now it's mack and cheese......
My Dad was an LS and Civil Engineer.I was with him into the early 90's then on my own from there. We always had "something to do" Now I have times that the truck stays parked on a sunny day. Surveyors have always taken it on the chin, first to feel the economic crunch and the last to see the relief.
  • Here in NE Illinois things are at a crawl and if it gets any slower it'll be at a stop. I've been solo now for two years. I've been at this for 35 years, my father was also a PLS and Civil Engineer, and I have never seen things at this kind of a stand still. Where does it go from here ?
  • Work in my area of Florida is very slow, though my company has recently picked up a fair amount of work, others are suffering losses. The government is saying there are 5 unemployed people for every job right now. So if you screw up and get fired, there are 5 people waiting in line for your job ... very competitive.
    • I'm assuming any new work you find is government related ?
      • I haven't had any government work at all, so far it has been for engineering firms. Topo's and asbuilts mostly with a few private boundaries usually with people not hurt by the recession, ie: Already has plenty of money. I don't know how we're getting the work, the owner of the company says its because he is a Rotarian and his Rotary "brothers and sisters" send him work.
  • Sadly here in Oklahoma things are pretty slow, I can see a slight improvement but nothing drastic.
