  The land title agency assigns the plan numbers.

  I use the letter R, no particular reason, followed by the year and then the project numbers in sequential order from when I started surveying. Example :
  R-16497 and if it is a location certificate then I add the letters LC. These numbers as well as other client information is feed into a data base.

    In our organization the project is given a job number at the time of receipt of a signed contract.  This started at Job 1 60 years ago.  All information related to that job contains that number along with the date it is added to the project file.  Maps are given that Job xxxxx number and if additional drawings then Job xxxxx-1 and so on.  Has worked for us.

  Hi, I use the date in this format: 160326
  (Year,month,day) & then if you have more than one project per day then add short or a abreaviated name or initials of the job.
