GPS L1/L2 position fixing incapability under heavy foliage is a thing of the past with the advent of GPS L5. This is according to GNSS sales people. With my very limited knowledge in telecommunication, I shall say without any degree of certainty that this is not true.

To my opinion, the only advantage of GNSS over GPS is the speed of position fixing. This is I guess due to greater number of navigation systems, channels, and frequencies supported in a GNSS receiver. Greater number of satellites, channels, and frequencies provide greater data reduction capability thus speedy positing fixing. It has no way of determining solutions when signals don't reach the receiver due to heavy foliage.

Of course, GNSS has greater chances of position fixing in locations where GPS constellation provides poor geometry and few satellites availability.

we are in our new project in Dubai " tower 521 m" .. we still studying the possibility of using GNSS system in the monitoring of building movement in addition to helping in the setting out works..
but maybe we can not use it at the beginning of construction work to the lack of adequate space to see a sufficient number of satellites in order to provide accurate information to the receivers station ...s
I think that this system will find some new Solutions for surveying matters...thnx
