Land Surveyor

Further studies

Hey guys

My name is Ireeta Albert. I'm a surveyor by qualification and 3 years post graduate practice. I've been doing a lot of engineering surveying since I was on a road project. I however did some cadastral surveys and a lot of topos. I intend to enroll for a masters this year but I'm torn between Urban planning and design Vs Geo-information science. I still want to practice but at a more senior position. Any advice on the pros and cons of each would help me a lot in my decision.

    Hi Ireeta

I assume You're working in Kampala (as Your profile). I mean, it has to consider (by first) where You want work in the next years. If Your Country seems to be investing in Agricoltural, for instance, the Land Study and Planning will be more interesting: so, GIS and Remote Sensing are to ways that You can approach.

I don't know so well Uganda, than I can give You only this poor suggestion ... ;-)

All the best for Your career!

Seems to me that, of the further studies you’re considering, your long-term goal might lead you to a decision. I think your decision lies in the answer to this question: Ultimately, do I want a career that is more involved with professional services or more technical?

Thank you for your contribution Kevin. That favours GIS more. Any more advice is still welcome. An informed decision especially by people that are in the same field is definitely better than an uninformed one.
