I recently ran across this fence planning tool and the thought occurred to me to ask you guys, the professional land surveyors of the world, what you think about such a tool. Is it troublesome or helpful?  You be the judge. I'll first tell you a little bit about it and then hand it over to you for comments.

Zareba, a manufacturer of electric fencing and animal containment systems,  released a Fence Planner tool to help customers configure and purchase electric fences. The planner uses Google Maps satellite view to allow customers to design and measure the amount of fencing that they need.

Using the tool it is possible to draw the outline of a planned fence directly onto Google Maps. Zareba claim that because users do not need to physically go outdoors and measure, the tool decreases errors in needed wire lengths, connectors and other related components.

Once the required fence has been drawn on Google Maps customers then view and decide on various fencing options before receiving a quote for their fencing requirements.

Please tell me, in your professional opinion, what you feel is wrong or right about such a tool...

  • Hello ePalmetto,

I believe that this type of tool is good for what its intended to do, rough estimate quantities.

But this type of tool gives the dangerous weekenders something to think about that may get them into trouble. Boundary resolution is more than dimensions from a questionable source.
