If we found another surveyors, blunder or mistake we always try to cover it or direct that to the surveyor concerned without degrading him (at least once),as ethical way of not to rundown another surveyor in public. But there is a danger when it goes to the court and the same ethic will turn other side.Ones I found a plan produced to the court by a surveyor, was in error in scale, and the final partition is to be carried out by me ,I should do the partition according to the extent given there, according to scale it was wrong,so no way to bluff then other than reporting, that I did after consulting the original surveyor, but he was under the impression that I could have covered up without reporting.but I did what I had to do as a professional.I think the same thin has to be reported to the client when it is a private survey,in a more ethical manner.

How ethics and minimum standards are enforced and what they are comprised of varies from place to place.

Here in Texas we have a regulatory Board that is given powers by the State. Those powers include enforcement of the rules and laws regulating Land Surveyors.

Codified law dictates to me what is ethical and what are minimum standards. If I violate those and another Land Surveyor knows this then they are obligated to report this to the Board.

Good ethics and good minimum standards start out with rules that can be enforced. The great advantage of this is that I can't rely on my own opinion of what is ethical and what is right, I am forced to think about how my position would be judged by another disinterested Land Surveyor who is not a party to the circumstances I find myself in. If I do not consider this point of view then I am doomed to be judged as negligent.

You can get away with just about anything as long as you do it in a transparent manner. If there is an error then say so but you do not necessarily have to change the conclusion you arrive at.
