Land Surveyor
I have used Survey Pro though out my career, on various hardware from 48 to Nomad.  I have worn out my 48's and have began looking for a replacement.  The 48 with Survey Pro was an all around device, it had it's place in the field as a data collector and on the desk for office calculations.  I haven't quite found its replacement.

I would like to find a survey calculation/data collection software for PDAs.  It seems that the IPAQ could possibly be the answer for the device; for it's size and computing power.  I could see the IPAQ in the field protected by an Otter Box and on my desk or in my pocket for calculations.  Nomads, Recons, Rangers... are very powerful and useful devices, but they lack the portability that I am looking for.

Here is a link discussing TDS Survey Pro on an IPAQ:

Does anyone have any reviews or information on how to acquire a copy of this version of Survey Pro?
I would also be interested in reviews of other software if available.

Does anybody Knows where is the Geodos and Psion data collectors resellers ?

  • Have a look at www.ceaser.co.za. For the PDA have a look at the new Psion G3.

I thought I would send you these pictures of the environmental case I found made by HP that is for their PDA's, I have had it for several years, and works great in the field. The key is to get the correct cable that fits tight, but better than that make sure your PDA has bluetooth. It wasn't that expensive I believe $125, may be cheaper now. You can see from the photo's that it has a place that stores the stylist that comes with it, belt clips on the back, and a front cover to protect as well as a clear poly protector for your screen. I used it with GPS and actually ran my first evaluation copy of FieldGenius on it. As far as FieldGenius being your pick for the software you couldn't have picked a better solution. Works great on the IPaq and these guys have been working with the intelliCAD engine for 20 plus years and they have it figures out. Let me know if i can help you further Skip Farrow LSU
PS I sent these photos from a new phone and I think it worked OK, if not let me know

Thanks for the replies. Since my post I have researched the Field Genius software. It appears to be the answer for what I have in mind. There is a fine line in my "portability" definition. There is portable for in the field data collection and then there is portable for in my hip pocket. It looks like with Field Genius, I will have the option to explore the performance on an iPaq but also have the option to install the software on a bonified data collector. My pull to the iPaq platform is the option of having a powerful calculation/data collection software on a device that runs between $250-$400 (and is hip pocket portable) vs the bonified data collectors that fall in the $1500-$5000 category. Being fully aware of the inadequacies of the more fragile unit.

If anyone has comments regarding the performance of the Field Genius software, I would be glad to hear them. Pros and Cons.

    Thanks again for your replies.
  • I don't know if we have same portability qualifications here. I am using Fieldgenius 2010 on a Windows mobile device (Nautiz X7). Portability is not supposedly an issue as it is a Windows Mobile based Handheld PC. This means that all Windows Mobile based Handheld PCs including the brands you metioned are supposedly infinitely superior than your IPAQ.
  • I am in the same boat, I have found that the TDS Pocket PC (Recon) is the easy answer. It is water proof, easy to up load and download. can be used with many different instruments and also GPS. They are a little spendy but well worth it. The only issue I have ever had was 10 below or colder we had to put hand warmers on the battery to keep it going. They also make a battery pack that takes AA. Comes in handy when crew forgets to charge batts. Kate
