Show us why the public should always call a land surveyor

Where are you surveying?

I hear a lot of talk about the future for women in surveying, although i find it hard to actually track any of them down. Here is an article from FIG [original article here: http://www.fig.net/pub/fig_2002/Js16/JS16_turrell_wilkinson_etal.pdf]

  • When I was an apprentice, another apprentice who happened to be female, was offered a better paying job with much less physical labor involved, I advised her to finish her apprentiship before taking the cocktail waitress job in Hawaii, well she didn't take my advise. I wonder if she can still get a high paying cocktail waitress job anymore. Another female apprentice, got married and pregnant, and couldn't work in the field. The most successful female surveyors I have met, studied and took their LS, so they could start a women owned business and get CALTRANS and other government work. In 33 years of surveying I have met 0 females would wanted to work so hard in such rough conditions and to put up with Party Chief who had no patience for compainers and slack offs. Of course some PC's bore the extra burden to work with the fairer sex. These were often given easier tasks due to the "handicap". Surveying is still a very physical job, While women can mentally compete with men, most dont want to do what it takes to physically compete, and those that do, easily find better paying jobs elsewhere, without the sweat, the dust, the insects, snakes and grit that true surveyors know and love! Perhaps a women become more outdoresy our industry will attract more, but alas it may be too late, because the economy being what it is, and robotics being what it is, the skill pool will not be getting much bigger in the future, and those spots will be reserved for the most competitive, PHYSICALLY and mentally.
