I don't know much about smartphones, not having coverage here discourages the purchase of one for me.  It seems like with the right software (app), and if it has Bluetooth capability to communicate with the total station, it should be able to replace the data collector. The hardware part is bound to be much less expensive. Does my theory hold up?

sir your idea is good.  i am electrical  engineer and have few experiences in surveying .i was also thinking but after reading your post i will atleast try to do some home work on this project.

BOY I WISH THERE WAS A GOOD APP TO REPLACE BULKY DATA COLLECTORS

For Android phones there are quite a few useful apps that can replace various aspects of your data collector
