Show us why the public should always call a land surveyor

Where are you surveying?

Hello all,

Ā

I am a student at the University of Maine, studying Land Surveying. I currently have my A.A.S. in Land Surveying from PSC and a few years in the field under my belt. At my previous company, we used a Leica 1205+ as our primary total station.

As a student now I need to write a feasibility report. Since I have enjoyed working with Leica products I've decided to research whether or not an upgrade to a Leica Smartstation would prove to a productive, and cost effective upgrade. But also if an upgrade to one of Leica's many GNSS systems would prove to be more efficient.Ā

Its a bit of loaded question, but say the work load consists of construction, route, ALTA and topographic surveys. All types of surveys performed among rolling hills and farm/woodland. It can get frustrating resetting base points due to construction/destruction of the land being worked on. My choice in upgrading to the smartstation is based on that the instrument could be set up, given coords through GPS positioning, and the survey could move forward. Rather than reconing for old points to occupy, and turning new points, and using them without being adjusted.

Ā

Please let me know thoughts on the topic, as i said I am not entirely informed on all of the products and options available, but am trying to get a real world sense of what works and what hasn't work for folks.

Ā

Thank you.
