A few years ago my wife and I bought some land in a burgeoning off-grid community. We had the land surveyed and it was divided into 0.5 acre sites. The community organizers paid for a very low budget survey and when I looked at it, I could see it was flawed in many respects. Unequal site sizes, roads in the wrong places etc. I don’t blame the surveyors; they did far more than what they were actually paid to do, but I realized the sites map was very problematic. In short, to make the community work, I dove into studying cartography, learned how to use QGIS and redrew the map. It has been quite the learning experience. (We aren’t legally severing the sites, it’s all very casual and the members are simply using GPS to locate their “area”). I am now working on two more projects with the same organizers using the data from the land survey's, however, I am not happy with the level of accuracy and wish to learn how to improve that so the transcription of the map to land is far more accurate.
