How to Extract Text from Images

At times a surveyor must do many types of investigation and reporting in order to get the results needed by a client.  Hopefully, this tool will both help with your level of creativity and go deeper with your investigative reporting.

i2OCR is a free online OCR service which can convert scanned documents, faxes, or screenshots into editable text. One of the best features of i2OCR is that it supports several input image formats including TIF, JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF, PBM, PGM, PPM. You can either upload the file from the hard disk or specify the URL of the image file. The service can recognize multi-column documents written in 30+ languages including major ones (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, and Chinese).

For better recognition, image must be at least 200 dpi.   If you need to convert a standard web image (usually 72dpi [dots per inch]) simply open it in photoshop and increase the dpi via IMAGE>IMage SIZE.  The converted text can be downloaded as text file and it may require a special editor to read if not English. The maximum image size allowed is 10MB. There isnā€™t any registration required nor any restriction on number of conversions.

i2OCR is a nice way to get text from images.

BONUS: Extract Text from Damaged or Corrupted MS Office/ Open Office Documents
There could be many reasons for your MS Office or Open Office documents to get corrupt and once corrupted, you might not be able to read any data from it. Corrupt office2txt is a freeware tool which can recover and extract the text even from damaged or corrupted Microsoft Office and Open Office files 2.X and 3.X files with the extensions .doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx, odt, ods and odp. It can also extract data from template and macro variants of these extensions such as dot, xlt and pps if they are changed to the correct corresponding extensions mentioned.
