Thoreau taught himself surveying, and made over 150 surveys in the Concord area, including the first accurate rendition of Walden Pond, “before the ice broke up, early in ‘46, with compass and chain and sounding line.”
The term “rod” refers to either an area of 30.25 square yards or a length of 16.5 feet. Thoreau determined that Walden Pond was 175.5 rods long, which is 0.55 miles. What is now called Thoreau’s Cove is at “D”, on the lower right, and the cabin site is marked “House”. The Fitchburg Railroad, at the upper right, was opened to Fitchburg on March 5th, 1845, in the same month that Thoreau moved to Walden. The arrow points north.
