Here’s a display of Keuffel & Esser slide rules, the calculating tool of days gone by. I was an avid collector of slide rules back in the 1990s and still have much of the collection safely stored away, out of sight, but this display case still sits out, showing the crème de la crème of the K&Es that I amassed back when they could be found weekly at estate and yard sales. The rules shown range from the 4" scale size pocket models to a 20" long duplex that would have given far more precision, but is intended for desk use only. The Rev. William Oughtred is credited as the primary inventor of the slide rule in 1622, based on other 17th century work on logarithms by John Napier and logarithmic scales by Edmund Gunter. Before the advent of the pocket calculator, the slide rule was the most commonly used calculation tool in science and engineering. The use of slide rules continued to grow through the 1950s and 1960s, even as digital computing devices were being introduced, but in the mid 1970s, the handheld electronic calculator made the slide rule largely obsolete. These K&E slide rules shown all date from the 20th century, and include some specialized models for surveyors and electrical engineering. #sliderule #sliderules #keuffel #esser #kande #keuffelandesserco #calculator #calculators #engineer #engineering #spacerace #spaceprogram #nasa #engineers #surveyor #surveyors #surveying #calculation #nobatteries #nobatteriesrequired #survey #electricalengineering #civilengineer #civilengineering #math #mathematics #maths #handtools #handtool by thedancherry http://ift.tt/1W6PE0rRead more…
