A couple of years back there was an interesting article released about the Responsibilities of a Land Surveyor that seemed worthy of passing on to you guys. You can read the article here, but basically, these are the points that the author is trying to make:
• The land surveyor must ensure that there is coordination between the surveying efforts of the project in the particular area of interest
• Supervise the functioning of a minimum of 3 crews and manage the office support teams.
• Render technical and operational guidance to the different teams.
• Ensure the performance of the projects adhere to the technical standards
• Render the ongoing performance of the project to the client
• Review and update the invoices of the onshore surveying projects
• Ensure the implementation of the onshore surveying standards
• He must be actively involved the tendering process of the onshore geomatics project
• He must update the technology for the process improvements of the day to day projects
• The land surveyor must manage the sub contractors and comply with the formalities of the HSE. Can you think of anything that this author missed? If so, please drop it as a comment below.

Indeed, land surveyors are researchers. In fact, research is the very first thing a land surveyor will do before doing what the general public sees, which is that guy peering through an instrument or walking around with a GPS unit.

The definition of the word seems to be aimed directly at what surveyors do. "1. Scholarly or scientific investigation or inquiry. 2. Close and careful study.
Here is an example of the kind of research we do in the United States.
The title transfers (deeds) must be investigated thoroughly. There are many things to look for when researching the deeds, such as being sure the description of the land in the latest deed agrees with the original deed; whether the original deed description was taken from a survey plan and whether the plan is also recorded, and on and on. There are many nuances to look for in the deed...terms of exclusion and terms of inclusion...."by the road" is a term of exclusion; "with a right-of-way" is a term of inclusion, and so forth.
On the ground evidence must also be studied carefully .... evidence of the property corners and boundary lines....even to the extent of "did the owner do improvements up to or over the boundary lines...what is the value and priority of the various pieces of evidence...and on and on.
Quite often it happens that after the field work and plotting is done other questions arise which require doing more resaerch before a final decision can be made about the location of the property lines.
It would be very interesting to hear what kind of research land surveyors from Sri Lanka do.

Thaks for the interest extnded.
Ours still the land registration done "by registration of deeds'' now we have initiated the
registration of Title.
So we investigate the deed or other documents what the client has.
see about shares what he has and and any servitudes ,investigate the location village town
and the local authority of the area , name of land (birth name of land which was given
at the first deed),survey topographical featurs and boundaris of abbuting lands witch will
idetify the property ,as you said any evidense which may require for the owner also recordr
and plot the plan and certify.
Being court commissioners we do the priliminary survey the after decree final survey to
enter the same in final partition decree,
It is very interesting to see how our extents of lands given in
our deeds,in paddy sewing extents. We still have a pan like thing carved out
of wood calld" LAHA"when we sew a full of that in the paddyfield ,the extent is
called A laha pady sawing exten(approximatly 0perch or 25Sqm,though extent
may depend on the person who sew paddy or the slope of land,So if you need to
divide a land of 8 lahas just sew 4lahas and mark a ridge.
Now we have mathamatcal approach for the same thing,
