Surveyor hit while working at busy intersection in University City

A local surveyor is clinging to life. He was hit by a car while on the job and authorities say the accident is further proof of the dangers surrounding that intersection.

The accident happened Thursday afternoon at Trinity and Delmar in University City.

Sam Seaver, 48,  is a surveyor with Abna Engineering in St. Louis. The company was hired by University City to work on making the busy intersection safer.

Police say Seaver and another surveyor were taking measurements in an open lane of traffic. Seaver was kneeling down holding one end of a tape measure, when a car turned from Trinity onto Delmar. The driver did not see Seaver and struck him. The driver stopped and called 911.

Police say Seaver has head injuries. He's now in critical condition.

"He underwent about twelve hours of brain surgery. The doctors say he's stable at the moment but they are not sure you know exactly how it's going to come out. We are all hoping and praying that he'll come back to us as he was," said Monte Russell, Seaver's friend and Masonic brother.

Rich Wilson, the University City Public Works Director, says the city hired the local survey firm Seaver worked for as part of a project to make the busy intersection safer.

"We are doing a mock roundabout to test the proposed final roundabout so that we are able to make sure that everything works before we tear up the roads here," said Wilson.

The temporary roundabout should be in place next week. If all goes well, a permanent roundabout will be up and running by next year.

No charges are expected.
