L.E.A.R.N Program

The comprehensive process for creating and distributing Land Surveyor Professional Development Hour (PDH) courses through the L.E.A.R.N. platform is a structured, five-step journey designed to ensure high-quality, practical educational content and maximum reach.

The overall program is supported by three main technological components: the Course Writer App, the Submission Process app, and the L.E.A.R.N. LMS App, which manages the course catalog.

I. Course Creation and Vetting (The Instructor Journey)

The creation process begins with instructor selection and concept refinement.

Step 1: Application and Vetting

The journey starts with an application where the prospective instructor submits their professional credentials, outlines their areas of expertise, and provides a preliminary course proposal.

The preliminary proposal must include:

  • A brief course title.
  • A summary of the intended teaching content.
  • A high-level outline of modules.
  • Identification of the target audience.

A content review team then vets the instructor's qualifications and proposal, often conducting an interview to discuss their vision, teaching philosophy, and subject matter expertise. This step ensures that only highly qualified and passionate instructors join the platform. Ideal instructors are often Licensed Professional Land Surveyors (PLS) or geospatial professionals with deep domain expertise.

Step 2: Course Design and Development

Once approved, the instructor collaborates closely with a L.E.A.R.N. instructional designer to refine the course outline. This phase focuses on:

  • Structuring the curriculum into logical modules and lessons.
  • Defining clear learning objectives.
  • Mapping out the entire learner journey to maximize engagement and retention.
  • Deciding on the blend of instructional elements, such as video lectures, reading materials, quizzes, and practical exercises.

Instructors receive access to a Course Writer App for remixing a course specifically written for surveyors in their state. They replace all the existing content with their own while maintaining the overall structure of the course.

Alternative Creation Path (30 Day Challenge)

For surveyors who may feel unsure about writing a full course, the 30 Day Challenge provides an alternative path. Every day in the challenge involves a different surveying task where proof of completion is uploaded. After 30 days, the app bundles the collected media, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) suggests three potential courses the surveyor could write from their tasks. When a course is selected, the AI generates the scaffolding, which includes five chapters, two submodules, and a field exercise for each chapter.

II. Content Creation and Assessment Requirements

Step 3: Content Creation Best Practices

The instructor creates all instructional materials following L.E.A.R.N.'s guidelines. This includes:

  • Video Production: Guidance is provided on recording high-quality video lectures, covering equipment, lighting, audio, and presentation style.
  • Lecture Notes and Resources: Comprehensive written notes, supplementary articles, relevant industry standards, and links to external resources are provided to complement the videos.
  • Practical Exercises: Crucially, the course must include hands-on exercises, real-world case studies, and project-based assignments that allow learners to apply theoretical concepts. Every chapter requires a dedicated field exercise featuring rich media and instruction from the field.
  • Quizzes and Assessments: Formative and summative assessments must be designed to effectively test comprehension and knowledge application.

Unique Assessment Structure for PDH Credit

The L.E.A.R.N. platform requires a unique course structure for Continuing Education (CE) credits to ensure practical, field-focused mastery. A student's grade is divided based on the following:

  • 60% comes from the quiz at the end of the course.
  • 40% comes from response videos submitted in the field after mimicking the Instructor's field exercises.

III. Review, Publication, and Distribution

Step 4: Quality Assurance and Review

Before publication, the course undergoes a rigorous quality assurance (QA) process. This review involves:

  • Peer Review: Evaluation by other subject matter experts on the L.E.A.R.N. platform.
  • Team Review: A thorough review by the instructional design and technical teams.

The QA checks focus on the course's accuracy, clarity, adherence to pedagogical best practices, technical functionality, and overall learner experience. Constructive feedback is provided, and the instructor makes necessary revisions to meet the platform's high standards.

Step 5: Launch and Distribution

Once the course passes quality assurance, it is ready for publication.

State Approval Process (Distribution):

  1. The finished course is submitted for approval in the state of origin.
  2. Once the course is approved and the instructor is approved in the state of origin, the course is then resubmitted to all 49 other states for approval. This inspires the instructor to discuss how surveying is performed differently in various states.
  3. Once another state approves the course, the instructor can hold a virtual classroom to teach students in that state.

Student Enrollment and Engagement:

  • When a student enrolls, they gain access to the course material (for reading) and receive a date to log into the virtual classroom to participate.
  • The virtual classroom participation allows the student to prove attendance and receive a digital certificate for taking the class.
  • L.E.A.R.N. actively markets new courses using channels such as email newsletters, social media, and targeted advertising campaigns. Instructors are also provided with resources to promote their courses within their own professional networks.

Post-Publication Role

After the course is live, the instructor's role shifts to continuous engagement and maintenance, which includes: engaging with students in discussion forums, monitoring feedback, and periodically reviewing and updating the content to reflect the latest technologies and industry standards.
