Surveyor who found 9/11 plane part gear calls it ‘piece of a murder weapon’ Frank VanBrunt was one of two surveyors who found the 5-foot-long piece of twisted landing gear from one of the planes that flew into the World Trade Center. It was located just blocks away from Ground Zero and he thinks the relic should be added to the Sept. 11 Memorial Museum. He was merely surveying a building when he stumbled upon a chilling crime scene. Frank VanBrunt was one of two land surveyors who found the 5-foot-long piece of twisted landing gear from one of the Boeing 767s that crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11. RELATED: LUPICA: TRACE OF A DAY THAT WILL ALWAYS STAND ALONE IS FOUND In the moments after the shocking discovery on Wednesday, VanBrunt asked his crew chief to take a picture. Only after some thought did the 59-year-old understand the magnitude of what he’d found in the 18-inch-wide space. “I realized later — this is a piece of a murder weapon lying there,” VanBrunt told the Daily News from his home in Hicksville, L.I. PHOTOS: GROUND ZERO: THE CHANGES SINCE 9/11 VanBrunt was taking measurements of the three properties stretching from 43 to 51 Park Place for the developer of the so-called Ground Zero Mosque, Sharif El-Gamal.
