In 1948, Warren Neer began his career with the Oregon Department of Transportation. Over the next 33 years, he wore many hats — as a survey chainman, an inspector, a transitman and a party chief — before becoming one of the surveyors for the original Interstate 5 Willamette River Bridge in 1962. That structure transformed the flow of traffic in the Eugene-Springfield area and served motorists up and down the West Coast for almost 50 years. In this video, Mr. Neer explains how, using the tools of the time — transit, tripod, plumb-bob, level, thermometer, stakes, hubs and steel tape — he and his crew were able to take measurements of the site that are still accurate by today's high-tech standards.
