Wilhelm Keuffel and Herman Esser founded their company in 1867. It became one of the leading makers of American surveying equipment. This is an unusual "twisted standards" transit. It derives its name from the unusual shape of the telescope support standards. A close examination of the picture will show the curving lines of the supports.
