Melriça

Pyramid marking the geodesic center of Portugal, in Melriça, is closely associated with the history of modern cartography in Portugal. This began in 1790 in the reign of D. Mary I, when the sovereign invited D. Ciera Francisco, lens of the Royal Navy, to start work on general triangulation territory for the establishment of the Charter of the United Geographic. As early as 1802, built the geodesic vertex Milriça of which belonged to the first group of 32 national vertices. This famous "Picoto" Masonry is a pyramid with base 3 meters and 9 meters put up, almost two centuries old.The work of triangulation, however, were interrupted in 1803 by virtue of the political situation of that time and later completed after 1834. Today there are around the country about 8000 vertices surveying, many of them built in almost inaccessible places. It was thanks to the selflessness of geographers and cartographers of the past century that created the National Geodetic Network which is one of the foundations for the geographic knowledge of the territory.
