I was the Survey Chief for Tenth Marine Regiment when we put this point in the ground. We established it for use by artillery surveyors for orienting howitzers.
Hey I found this monument in jacksonville, nc on a marine base. It looked like a lawn mower had ran over it and it was completely out of the ground, so I took it with me! I guess this is just a control monument for various surveys on base.
