Equations used to convert coordinates

proper equations used to convert Lat. and Long. coordinates to Lambert coordinates and Mercator coordinatesWhat are the proper equations used to convert Lat. and Long. coordinates to Lambert coordinates and Mercator coordinates?? I need the equations for a paper I'm writing, I know that using the program Corpscon anyone can convert them

please help.. thanks guys

  • If what you are trying to achieve here is coordinates transformation from local to grid then that would definitely be much more complicated as the process requires to transform first the local coordinate values into its geocentric counterparts before finally hitting the grid values.

  • Please note that the Length of Meridian Arc, S is unfortunately an elliptical integral and has no closed form solution. It simply means that it is not directly integrable. You need to discretize this function using power series expansion method (ie. McLaurin technique) in order to arrive at linearly dependent directly integrable chunks of functions. Cheers and Good Luck!

Please check this equation used to convert geographic/geodetic coordinates into grid using Transverse Mercator map projection technique. Hope this helps.

  • Please search the net for Map Projection Manual by Snyder.

  • Is it for Transverse Mercator projection?

Omar, thank you for a very good question.  One that I can not answer, as I am not a geodesist, but a land surveyor.  All of the math behind the conversion is like a mystery inside of a mystery to me, but here is another conversion tool that I found:  UTM & Lat-Lon Conversions

I wonder if LSU should have a group for experts in geodesy to help guide members on subjects like this.  I know that most land surveyors are not geodesists, and I suspect that most geodesists are not land surveyors.  However, the two professions are interrelated and really a part of the same ultimate reality that we as professionals in the geo-sciences family reside.

here is a helpful discussion thread about the conversions on the Esri Forum:

and a couple of helpful coordinates related documents here:

let me know if this helps Omar
