How to map topography under Trees?

Hi All, I'm a university student and GIS specialist and definitely NOT an experienced surveyor.  My research project uses drone imagery to map snow surfaces and is attempting to measure show depths.  We need to validate the the snow surfaces in forested environments, and of course, our GNSS base station and RTK rover setup do not work under canopy.  I need some advice on the equipment and training necessesary to overcome this issue.  I picture getting checkpoints (3d coordinates of the snow…

Have you tried this USGS Topo overlay and other tools in this kmz file?

See the kmz file and open it to Google Earth and play with it.  Turn it on and watch it build a USGS Topo overlay with the "USGS Topo Map Overlays" submenu selected....... On rare occasions when the USGS server is down you will get a big red X - try again later - this day was one of them,otherwise I would have attached a sample jpg screen shot of my place with the overlay working instead of the X.  Please visit my website at www.gbreisch.com for other related subjects.
