Best Robotics System

Getting into robotics system entails very careful study on what brand and model to take as it involves a lot of money. Just relying on their respective marketing materials doesn't actually help you but prolongs your agony.

I am considering to get into robotics system and I am having difficulty in choosing which brand and model to take. I am considering among top makers: Leica, Trimble, Topcon, and Sokkia. Any suggestions? Thank you.

  • I've been using Robotics for about 6 years now with 3 different brands. The one I recommend and personally feel like it takes the cake is the Leica 1205+ with an Allegra MX data collector hosting Carlson Surv CE software. Just can't beat it!

  • I know this post was made awhile ago, but I have been using the Topcon 9003A for about 3 months know. I generally do small scale boundary surveys, topography, and construction surveys. The 9003 system is being replaced for the new Topcon QS sytem, but has very similar features. One of the problems I've had with the 9003 is it's range, only about 1200 feet before loss of RC-3 tracking capabilities. This supposedly is being taken care of with the new RC-4 and Xtrac 8 technology which comes with the new QS system. I thuroughly enjoy the robots ability to make real-time corrections during a stakeout. This makes for some extremely fast layouts. I've been using this as a one-man crew, so another thing to think about is the added weight for one man. Lugging a few sets of legs and the 50 - 60 lbs of equipment can get tiring for one man. I feel it has increased productivity and has definetly reduced overhead in the short-time. Once it's paid off hopefully we'll be able to higher another man which will increase our productivity as well, as long as the work is there. I definetly would suggest this system if your used to using Topcon or have a good sales rep that can teach you all the tricks, Great Machine.
  • It definetly depends on how much your willing to spend. A close friend of mine uses a Lieca and he absolutely loves it. They hav the Viva line which is all interchangeable pieces for GPS, Robotic, and conventional uses. I personally prefer Topcon, but suggest any robotic you do purchase has both a reflectorless option as well as the ability to find the prism if lock is lost. I believe all of these models feature the later of the two it jst depends on whether or not you get a newer model, since some of the older versions don't have the ability to find th rod man efficiently.
    Best of luck.
  • My experience in robotic total station are only and Trimble S6 and Trimble 5600 Series as we upgrade 5600 into to autolock and robotic DR.. only one person is enough to operate using survey controller and small prism you can do your work alone perfectly.. Very easy and very accurate work since minimal error due to cause sometimes by a untrained rodman/lineman.. I used Trimble S6 when we have project with the british company as they check our work they use Trimble S6 so i try to operate it. S6 is more convenient than 5600 for me since it is design as a robotic total station, very fast in changing face as you change your move..
  • Hi Arnel,
What I do is High rise Layout, and I am using a Sokkia SRX5" Robotic Total Station along with an Allegro Mx data collector and SurvCE 2.5
This machines and software allow me To translate literally the foundation drawing to the ground. According with the experts the software is an important part to work with, likewise, a powerful data collector (full color, touch screen, CPU speed minimum 624 Mhz, Ram at least 128 Mb and storage minimum 2000 Mb). I can work until 250m away from the TE with a good signal.
I hope this comment be useful. Good luck
