Geomatics is a relatively new scientific term, coined byĀ Pollock and WrightĀ in 1969, with the intention of combining the termsĀ geodesyĀ andgeoinformatics. It includes the tools and techniques used inĀ land surveying,Ā remote sensing,Ā cartography,Ā geographic information systemsĀ (GIS),global navigation satellite systemsĀ (GPS,Ā GLONASS,Ā Galileo,Ā Compass),Ā photogrammetry,Ā geographyĀ and related forms of earthĀ mapping. The term was originally used inĀ Canada, because it is similar in origin to both French and English, but has since been adopted by theĀ International Organization for Standardization, theĀ Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and many other international authorities, although some (especially in theĀ United States) have shown a preference for the termĀ geospatial technology
